Traffic management plan is in place

Updated: Aug 13, 2020

The Nairobi Expressway which starts at Mlolongo and terminates at the James Gichuru junction is an integral section of the Northern Corridor which carries the bulk of the country’s economy by providing passage to 90% of cargo destined to the neighboring landlocked countries.

This section also serves the outlying residential areas of Mlolongo, Athi River, Kitengela, Machakos among others which are loosely considered as the bedroom of the capital city, Nairobi.

The Nairobi Expressway road section of Mombasa Road therefore, is part of the busiest highway in Kenya which currently has vehicular volume of 120,000 daily.

The current construction of this section has been anticipated to have a slow-down effect on traffic flow into and out of the city. However, KeNHA has put in place a traffic management plan to ensure normal traffic flow as it undertakes works that will eventually ease traffic congestion across the city, once construction is complete.

Although works on the Nairobi Expressway will be limited to the median section of the road, some instances will require closure of a single lane on either side of the highway to ensure safety of motorists plying the route. A Section of the road at Popo Road/ Next Gen Mall and another section between Cabanas and the JKIA turnoff has been affected. Barriers have been raised on either sides of the road to separate the closed lane from the lanes that remain in use.

As the country anticipates the resumption of international flights, motorists are advised to plan ahead and leave earlier to avoid missing your flights or appointments.

Due to the nature of high traffic volume and numerous junctions along the A104, KeNHA has engaged traffic police for the entire period of construction to direct traffic and ensure safety. Currently, police have been stationed on site. Motorists are requested to follow directions as shall be indicated on the road signages provided, and/or by traffic marshals on site.
