Inspection of progress of works on the Nairobi Expressway

The KeNHA Board of Directors Chairman Eng. Wangai Ndirangu (far right) accompanied by Director Eng. Carrey Orege, Director General Eng. Peter Mundinia (far left), and senior management staff visited the Nairobi Expressway Campsite to inspect the progress of works.




During the visit the Chairman was taken through the entire campsite where cutting edge technology is being used to ensure a high quality and timely completion of works. Eng. Wangai interacted with young engineers and technicians working in the project. These young minds are a sample of a local labour force of about 1,878 construction staff members who are working on site. In addition, there are 145 Kenyan staff working on the relocation of water facilities.





PROGRESS REPORT

Temporary facilities

Construction of the main campsites in Section 1: Mlolongo – Southern Bypass and Section 2: Southern Bypass – James Gichuru is completed. The Laboratories and concrete batching plants have also been completed and the quarries have started production.

Section 1 (Mlolongo to Southern Bypass) Construction Progress

Subgrade:

· Black Cotton Replacement and subgrade filling are being conducted at K7+200-K10+000 and K15+500-K15+710.

· Weekly amount of black cotton replaced accounts for 2.91% of total amount to be replaced. 32.39% of total black cotton has been replaced since inception.

· Weekly amount of filling completed accounts for 2.53% of total filling. 21.59% of total filling is completed cumulatively since inception.

Culvert:

JKIA Interchange CK0+200 Pipe Culvert has been completed.

Bridge:

· K7+597 Main Line Bridge: Abutment No.0 Spread Foundation concreting, backwall reinforcements is completed;

· Abutment No.1: Spread Foundation reinforcements works completed; P01-2 Piling

is completed.

· JKIA Interchange: AK0+524 Ramp Abutment No.0: reinforcements completed;

· Eastern Bypass Interchange: AK0+511 Ramp P12 Pier Spread Foundation reinforcements completed.

Section 2 (Southern Bypass to James Gichuru Road) Construction Progress

Subgrade:

· The weekly amount of black cotton replaced accounts for 0.1% of total amount to be replaced. 0.6% of total

· black cotton has been replaced since inception.

· Weekly amount of filling completed accounts for 0.1% of total filling. 0.5% of total filling is completed cumulatively since inception.

Bridge:

· Pile: ML02 Bridge: P11-2# pile is completed.

· ML09 Bridge: P34-1# and P35-2# piles concreting is completed.

· Spread Foundation: ML01 Bridge: P07# and P12# concreting and ML02 Bridge: P03# and P04# concreting completed;

· Pier: ML01 Bridge: P01-1#, P02-01/02#, P05-2#, P13-1# pier columns completed.

· Box Girder Pre-casting: ML01 Bridge: A0-P01#, 4#, 6# and P03-P04# span 1# box girders completed.

· 14 spread foundations, 30 piles, 9 box girders and 14 pier columns have been completed so far.

Water Facilities Relocation Progress

· K16+000-K16+700 RHS DN800 Pipe: 108m, cumulatively: 668m;

· K13+000-K15+000 RHS DN600 Pipe: 576m, cumulatively: 1464m;

· K12+500-K16+700 LHS DN300 Pipe: 192m, cumulatively: 1527m;

· Cumulative length of Pipe laid: 4932m

· K16+200 LHS Micro-tunneling: 11.4m, cumulative: 11.4m;

· K16+200 LHS Micro-tunneling: 9.6m, cumulative: 9.6m;

· K15+210 LHS Micro-tunneling: 5.9m, cumulative: 5.9m.

Total micro-tunneling length: 168.6m.
